So within the next week I shall acquire a deep blue 4GB iPod mini. I've always loved that model for some reason. Anyway, I'm going to be gutting it and replacing the battery and the microdrive with a cf card. It is probably going to be a 32 GB, since those are reasonably priced. The 128 GB cf card is way too expensive, but I may end up buying a 64. Not totally sure yet.

Theoretically, since all cf cards have ata connections, the 64 GB one should work... right?

I don't really follow you there? You mean the bus inside the mini?

Ah...you mean the CF 50-pin connector! ATA is 40 pin, thats why you need a converter card. But iPod mini has ZIF interface right?

Well, the Microdrive that was originally used in the iPod mini was created by IBM with the goal of fitting in a CF card spot, so all the pins will match up. However, I don't know if the iPod will be able to address all 64 gb. What do you think?

Can you just crank open the hood on your mini and swap the microdrive with a CF card??

CF is 50 pin and ATA is 40 pin??

I have no clue regarding the 64 gig issue, I'll guess it will work fine ;)

Yeah! The project will get going in about 2 weeks when I have all the components (battery, 64 gb cf card).

I'll have pictures up too!

I've done it and it swapped over painlessly.

You may have to restore/reboot it several times though to get it started.

Don't go cheap on the CF Card, make sure you get a quality one because the one I got started to have problems after about a month of use. The folder icon would show up and the device would not do anything at completely random times.

Yeah I bought a Transcend 64 GB one that was marked down to $115 on Amazon.com.

I also bought an EforCity battery (I thin that's the name?), and it was 62 cents...without shipping. It had 4.5 stars, but has anybody actually used one of these?

So I put a 64 gb card in, and the iPod restored. The UI works fine and I can access everything, however, the iPod mini OS freezes after being plugged into a computer (windows and Mac OS X). I have to then restart it, and this repeats. I've tried multiple restores.

Any ideas?

I figured it out! It needs to be put in disk mode in order to sync. It works perfectly and the write speed is phenomenal. Pictures will be up soon!

So I have to sync it in disk mode, but it works just great! The new battery works well too.

I'm still amazed at the microdrive...I think it's pretty cool so it's going in my bin of cool obsolete technology, right beside the Quantum Bigfoot :)
