Anyone think the ipod photo update will be soon? I know the buyer's guide says recently updated but i feel like something is around the corner (a month). What do you all think. Thanks.

they had better not be! i only bought mine the other month!

i think they may well be phasing out the standard ipod with b&w screen and moving the 30Gb photo into its place. but i hope there are no major changes or i will cry!

    Late February.

I personally wouldn't expect anything but maybe a larger size tweak this summer with a full-blown lineup change before the holidays (October/November).

My guess is somewhere near september. We'll probably see bluetooth iPods, MAYBE iPods that can stream to AirPort Express's, that would be sweet. I don't even care if its an adapter you have to add to get that feature, that would seal the deal for me to get a new one.
Personally, I'd like to see a revamp of the user interface. They don't need to change the click wheel, just give some new life to the visual navigation. I've had an iPod since the first ones were out, and I'm really starting to get tired of it and would like to see something fresh. They definitely need to add some more games that take advantage of the color screen. I would also like to see them change the calendar part on the photos to match the colors I use for each calendar in iCal. It would be nice if they added an option to see them monthly/weekly/daily on the iPod as you can in iCal. I would like to see them make some "Mac only" features again to persuade people to switch, such as what I explained above.

I keep waiting for that rumored 80 gig. Beyond that anything else would simply be a bonus.

Me too... although a 60gb one would be OK except for the persistent reports I keep reading with distortion problems from the headphone jack, particularly noticeable when playing jazz/classical piano pieces.

A lot of attention has been particularly focussed on the impedance of the type of headphones you use. The higher the better, apparently.

Yeah, the distortion reports are a worry. I hope this is simply a design flaw, and will be taken care of in the next revision.

Its possible that people are using headphones with really low imp, that could create some noise. But you don't want to use headphones with such a high impedance that you run into volume issues.

I have been running my iPod through the line out with a headphone amplifier. I am assuming this would take care of the problem, plus you get the improved sound. However, I realize alot of people don't want to go this route.

Either way I hope they fix the issue, when iPods start to lose sound quality to make room for other features, this is a major problem!

Here's to new 80 gb iPods with no sound issues! Sooner than later would be nice too. ;)

What we need is more software, like more games, and better devices/speed from the photo connector.

I use 70 ohm hd25s, and there is a little bit of distortion.. But nothing major. No worse than any other portable player. But I found my old 15gig 3rd gen sounded slightly better than my 30 gig photo.

Still... Battery life is bloody amazing.

I'm not prepared to wear big closed-cup 'phones on my daily commute on the London Underground.

It's with the standard Apple 'phones or even with a pair of Shure E3cs that people are getting rightly pissed off.

I'm not going to spend over £300 on a piece of audio equipment that sounds crappy. Nor do I feel like spending extra on 3rd-party solutions to get what should be expected in the first place...

My big Bose headphones cracked over the weekend - are there problems with the E3C's? I was planning on ordering a pair today in order to survive my summer deadline schedule.

I've got Sennheisser Mx500 on my 60Gb, I noticed some distortion with the Apple supplied 'phones, but not with the Sennys, plus there's no trace of it through a speaker system, even though running a headphone-level output into a line-input is always going to cause problems.

Mind, there's not a lot of "jazz/classical piano pieces" on my iPod, Tori Amos and Fiona Apple is about as subtle as it gets... ;) :D

Nothing inherently wrong with the e3cs per se...

This is just one thread on the Apple Forums about the problem with Photo iPods.

Similar threads are everywhere on www.ipodlounge.com, www.headfi.com etc. There are even one or two on these forums.

The e4c's are going to be released in about a week. If you are looking to buy high end canal phones, it may be worth holding off. They are a bit more expensive, but they are supposed to be a huge improvement.

Of course I have never heard them myself, but all reports make them sound very nice!
