I have ordered one 24" 2.16 with 7600gt... and i wonder... how loud is it?

My MacMini G4 is silent and i have heard that the previous iMac C2 were dead silent...

    It's close enough to Silent.

I can tell you, coming from a full-out bore PC Gaming Rig that sounded like it could literally take off into space when you pressed the "On" button...

This thing is a veritable tomb of silence :)

    LOVE IT.

It isn't quite as powerful as my bada$$ gaming rig with 7900GTX card... but... you know... it's sooooo much more pleasant to sit in front of and work with...

Ahhhh silence... awesome design.... and... just everything :) haha

    Too Quiet

My first Apple. It is very quiet when not accessing the cd/dvd. I am so used to the loud fan and hard drive activity when I launch a program. Sometimes I am not sure what the mac is doing because there is no activity light for the hard drive.
It makes a little noise when working on a disc.

This thing is awesome!! 2GB 2.16 Ghz and the 256mb 7600 GT.
It took 7 days to get to Canada.

    love it.
p.s. I pooched my first attempt at Boot Camp and now have a small
32 GB partition I don't know how to get rid of??

Open up bootcamp and restore everything to one partition. The option should be there when you start up Boot Camp Assisstant :)

The 7300 24" at the Apple Store had NO noise I was able to detect in a store setting--not with my ear right up to the rear vent!

In a quiet room it probably had some fan noise.

A 7600 machine might be louder (because hotter) but I don't know.

Well if I put my ear up to the vent, I DO hear other machines (like Mac Pro) that people call quiet. So hearing nothing from the iMac does tell me something.

(I could however feel hot air blowing--so I know fans were turning.)

    Bought a brand new iMac 24" 3.06GHz 4GB MEM 1TB HD 2 weeks ago.

Soft hum, but enough to go nuts.

Returned it, and today got a new one.

    Same story.

I've read about this hum on different fora and ppl try to locate the problem.

But I noticed putting the system 2 feet from a wall actually solves the problem. Now that's great if your desk is in the middle of the room, but not the case here.

So this one's going back as well and I don't want another one.

I have a white 20" and a recent aluminum 20" model both are DEAD SILENT. No hum, no squeeck, nothing...

I think it's a serious flaw of the 24". At first I thought this new 3.06GHz processor needed some serious cooling but seems the 2.8GHz suffers the same problem.

If you install iStat Pro from www.islayer.com one can read the fan speeds.
1198-1200 rpm all the time and according to others it's same on both 2.8 and 3.06 models.

So I think Apple missed something here or they all have their pc's @ least 2 feet from a wall.

So tomorrow this iMac is going back, no compromises. Sorry Apple !

Hmmm, I have a 24" 2.4GHz Al iMac about 5 inches from my wall and it is still dead silent. iStat shows my fans at 1200/1200/700. It's warm, but not hot, to the touch.
Sorry for your noises. If mine made a racket, it would drive me crazy as well.

    Very quiet

In normal operation I cannot hear it over ambient sounds in my flat. If I lean my head forward to the vents underneath I can just about hear it. It's not loud enough to hear otherwise.

I have a 24" 3.06GHz and it is silent as well. You do hear the DVD when burning a DVD and you can hear (if you put your ear near the screen) the HD when it starts up. I am acutally amazed at how silent it is. This is my first Mac which I bought about two weeks ago.
