Ever since Apple went to iTunes 5, and now iTunes 6 as soon as I launch iTunes, it beachballs (aka crashes) and I have a force quit iTunes. It never did this at all with iTunes 4.9 or below. It does it in any account I log into, so its not user account related.

    Here is what I've tried:

    -repaired permissions
    -deleted iTunes prefs
    -deleted iTunes and re-installed
-deleted everything iTunes (except music and libraries) and reinstalled everything.
    -deleted iPod pref
-deleted iPod pref in OS X Library folder

    Nothing works!

I had to restore an old iTunes library so I could go back to iTunes 4.9.

Has anyone else had this problem?

Any suggestions as to how to fix this problem?

Ok...I think I fixed my own problem. If you turn off automatic updates inside of iTunes then it goes away. So in other words, if its selected then it will check for updates every time you launch iTunes. If you're on dial-up like me, and not online, it will beachball because there is no internet, so it cannot check for updates.

So for future reference to others using iTunes 5, or 6, and are on dialup and get beachballs, connect to the internet and then try launching iTunes. If it works, go to the iTunes menu and then to Preferences. In the general section de-check where it says Check for Updates Automatically.
