    Hi All....
I thought I'd post my blog entry here as a warning to all you 3G iPod users.

Well I decided to update my iTunes. I haven't synced my iPod for a bit because I hadn't added any new songs. Today I purchased a few songs, imported a couple of CDs and decided to connect my iPod. Well my recent purchased apparently are too new for my 3G iPod. when I attempted to sync the iTunes told me "your ipod software is too old for some of your songs, please update at the Apple website." So I updated my iPod software and so on. Too bad it didn't do anything and I got the same message.

So that means I won't be buying any more tracks from iTunes since I can't even sync them too my iPod. Isn't that the point?

I'll be shopping at some other download sites with Mp3s...since my iPod is no longer supported by the iTunes store. And people wonder why legal downloads are not that popular.

If Apple won't support my ipod, I won't support their store.

I'm using iTunes 6 and a 3G iPod with no problems. And yes, iTMS stuff as well.

quite odd. Mine is a 2G and still works fine with iTMS and iTunes 6. Maybe you got goofy one. Is there an Apple Store nearby?

Forgive me if this is bleedingly obvious, but you actually updated the software ON your iPod, not Just the iPod updater software?

My 3G iPod works just fine with the latest iPod software (2.3), iTunes (v6) and songs from the Australian store. I'm guessing it's probably worth resetting your iPod back to factory settings and going from there.

Sometimes it's better to ask yourself if you've done something wrong before making sweeping generalisations...especially when other people don't seem to be experiencing the same problems.

Sometimes it makes sense to listen to someones complaint before making sweeping generalizations about their intent. So if you guys aren't experiencing the same...that's fine so offer some tips on troubleshooting.

It is not working for me so I am entitled to may opnion.

What firmware revision is on your 3G iPod? Settings -> About on the iPod itself?

No problems here either (although to be completely honest I would love to have an excuse to purchase a nano or 5g)

I would try to update your ipod firmware 1st. Failing that, trash the preferences for itunes, then consider reformatting the ipod harddrive (recognizing that failure to get it to sync again with iTunes could be a problem).

Have you tried the discussion pages on Apple's website? can be useful...

Not even an option anymore since he bought songs using 6.0.

I agree. Methinks he doesn't know how update the firmware or it didn't work, which is why I was asking for the fw version on the iPod.

Ah, didn't catch that. I thought they were older tracks. I haven't bought any new tracks with iTMS 6 yet. I'm hoping JHymn gets updated soon to handle these as well.

Perhaps if you had come to ask for help, we wouldn't be so touchy. Just saying iTunes sucks and you won't be buying anymore songs, then getting defensive isn't going to get you anywhere. We've given you some tips, try checking the firmware and re-updating the iPod itself, reset is your best bet. I realize you're frustrated, but attitude will get you no where here. ;)

My sister has a first gen iPod that plays her new songs just fine. I'm assuming that the software wasn't installed correctly.

iTunes 6, 3rd gen iPod. Just bought an album last week and it's on my iPod no problem.

I'd recheck to make sure you have the latest software on your iPod.

This seems to be a user error, as opposed to iTMS/ iPod problems. When you plug in your iPod, it should tell you that there is an update available. That's when you're supposed to click yes to update the iPod, which should allow you to use the iPod. The iPod is just hardware after all, it can handle the new versions of the iPod software no matter when it was made.

The name of this thread should be "User Error Sucks".

Also using a 3rd gen with itunes 6 with no issue.

Sounds like you just downloaded the iPod updater to your computer and didn't actually update your iPod itself. If under Settings > About it doesn't say your iPod's software is version 2.3, you don't have the latest software on it. I'd say you need to verify this before doing anything else.

    User error does suck.

After consulting a couple of forums... I have heard some other random issues for random reasons. I did what some people refer to as the "Big Hammer" solution. I reset my ipod and reinstalled the firmware. This the last resort for me because I had a few songs on my ipod not on my comuputer...so I had to find the ones that were missing and save them on my computer before resetting. You can see why I was reluctant to do it.

On my comments about legal downloads:
I usually just buy CDs for the tracks I want, unless it is a cheesy pop song. This works fine because we know the music industry doesn't believe in singles anymore. Most people I know do the "borrow the CD from a friend method....or just burn an mp3 CD to get new songs.....nobody downloads. Although I know a few people who use Russian legal sites. LEgal downloads are still a small portion of music sales and overall music dowloads. It is not all that popular. I am sure most of you filled your ipod with preexisting not iTMS songs.

Thanks for letting me know you guys weren't having problems, it caused me to investigate other solutions (besides the re-import solution)

Hmmm - blame, call names, and then investigate....and here I have always thought you should investigate BEFORE doing the other 2. Silly me
