Firstly, what sort of computer are you using?

You may have only lost the link between iTunes and the song rather than the actual song file. If this is the case then you can simply drag the file (assuming you know where it is) back into iTunes and it'll play normally again (hopefully :p ). The default location for music (iTunes or otherwise) is generally the My Music folder on Windows XP and the Music folder on OSX.

Can you locate the songs from ~/music/iTunes/iTunes Music and drag them to your iTunes?

Go to your Music folder, open iTunes and then open iTunes Music. Is there a massive list of your artists there?

If so, quit iTunes, delete the data file that was in the same folder as your iTunes Music folder (it's called iTunes Library) and maybe delete the .XML file with it. Now open iTunes and then drag that folder icon named iTunes Music into it. That should re-add your music. :)

This is of course assuming that your music is there. It should be by default.

OMG! If you shutdown your computer after the deletion, there is a decent chance to recover them using proper utilities. However, if you continue using it, which I assume you do, then it's quite likely that the space occupied by the deleted files has been overwritten, rendering them unrecoverable.

Forget about it and turn the page. You still can re-rip those songs from your CDs, can't you?

Don't bother for 3000 songs. What file did you delete exactly? It would have taken ages to delete 3000 songs from your hard drive (assuming you used the GUI). Are you sure you didn't just delete the iTunes Library data file? :)

Do you have a lot of extra hard drive space all of a sudden?

In your preferences under the advanced tab, does your music library location match the location of where it is kept on the hard drive. Maybe it got moved by accident or you changed the default in the prefrence :)

Okay, well this probably won't work because OSX writes over the newly cleared space notoriously quickly. However, there are a couple of apps you could try to salvage your music with. Data Rescue is probably the most famous and most recommended but if you don't like the look of it, then check out File Salvage. As you can see neither is cheap and it's likely that neither will be able to get all of your music back. I recommend re-ripping your music if possible.

Sorry for the bad news.
