i've got 30gb black video. i'm going away for christmas and got a laptop. do i need iTunes on the laptop to charge the iPod through the USB?

that is correct and if u can ...
u may want to buy a usb power adapter travel pack thing so u can just plug your ipod into a socket in the wall .. i find it quicker and more effective
considering your gunna need ur laptop on a long time ... probably have to have that plugged in to ..
if u get wat i mean :)

Definitely not. Though I'd recommend getting an AC adapter for charging your iPod so you don't have to have your laptop on whenever you want to charge it.
