iTunes Play Next (and continue)

I've always liked the idea behind Play Next, but don't understand why it doesn't continue playing from the "next" song that I added. It goes back to the previous playlist once the Next song is over. Is it possible to Play Next and Continue On?

Also, is Play Next (or some kind of queue system) possible on the iPhone? So I can queue up songs as I'm listening.

Anyone? Is that just the way Play Next was intended to be? i.e. go back to previous list after the Play Next song(s) is over?
