is it just me, or are those visualizers a lot lamer than the normal iTunes ones?

    Awful.

Very amateurish looking, and has the nerve to stick a pop-up when iTunes closes and try and charge for it as well!

Magnetosphere wipes the floor with it as far as visualisers go, and that's free.

    G-Force, WhiteCap

Thanks for bringing Magnetosphere to my attention--it is awesome!

I feel G-Force & WhiteCap should be mentioned. Mesmerizing

eXo is a very nice visualiser as well. More conventional than Magnetosphere, but with a nice mix of 2D and 3D, and nice blur/bloom effects.

Milkdrop by Winamp is by far the best visualizer out there.

Pity Winamp isn't available for the Mac.
