That was a nice article. Microsoft is behind the times in terms of a music player. Oh, and movie maker and music and podcast maker, and video DVD maker and photo catalogue software. Microsoft still doesn't have an answer for iLife. And they're catching up about %80 to iTunes. Pretty sad.

Companies like MS and Sony gradually start to understand that this music battle is a lost case: Apple won.

I don't think they have given up yet. Sony just released some new software, and rumor has it MS will be coming out with their own hardware MP3 player.

How I stoped being stupid and finally got an iPod

So the author finally overcame his anti-Apple bias and bought an iPod. Now he lashes out angrily at Microsoft and its Windows Media Player. Maybe hell has frozen over....

That should be true if Apple wasn't turning a profit and increasing market share.:D

    Hmmm

Why is it that people always say Apple has a closed system with iTunes and iPod. I cant use my mac to by from other music stores. Isn't that the same thing?

The problem is both the software and hardware, nothing even comes close to Apple there, still. And to get customers they have to be even better than the Apple solution, now they are behind, man, it's tough for the competitors.
It's hard to catch up with the market dominant if the market dominant leads the innovation and is superior to the competitors in every aspect! It's good that they try though, it makes Apple innovate more.

Good read. Here's the rub of it. Microsoft isn't even trying. Yah yah I know it sounds like a copout excuse but I'm dead serious. I don't know if its corp politicts, funding, too many cooks in the kitchen syndrome, the design had to be locked in how for shipment in Vista later this year, the reorg they did last year, or if the project manager is just an idiot but there is something there holding them back.
