Someone posted an ad wishing to trade their 60GB iPod Video for a 4GB iPod Nano. Obviously I was extremely skeptical, so I e-mailed him. Turned out he's a marine from the US who was travelling through my city. We were keeping in touch as I wanted to be sure the guy was legit, and I met him this morning to see what he was all about. Turns out the iPod was indeed in excellent condition (very few scratches that can be buffed out with scratch remover), and he was not very technology-savvy. He just wanted a tiny iPod instead of the "big clunky one" that he hadn't even used 2 GB's of. Needless to say, I traded him my 4GB Nano STRAIGHT-UP!

I'm now the proud owner of a 5G iPod Video, and a modified sig.

In one way, I feel like it isn't fair but at the same time, the guy knew what he was trading. It's his fault for not researching and knowing that his ipod was worth more than a nano. Good trade....

There is a big difference in price between the two, yeah, so it's a bit weird that he didn't ask for compensation for some of the difference, but I guess he knew and didn't care? If he went into it blind and didn't check the price difference then that is just bizarre.

I'd rather have an iPod nano than a 60GB iPod video, but that's just me. :p

Some people just don't sweat the little stuff, (gasp, like mp3 music players) when they're thinking of larger issues (like trying not to blown to bits). Whatever the marine feels is fair, we cannot judge if the marine was "ripped off".

How is it ripping somebody off if both parties are now happier than they were before?

Not to be negative, but are you sure it wasn't stolen? That sounds like a deal too good to be true.

Nah, I feel that way as well. I never brought my 3rd gen 20GB iPod around w/ me, and I doubt I'd haul the 60GB iPod around either.

Yup, me too. I sold my 3G Video because after a month, the novelty of watching a movie on a tiny screen wore off. After all, I still have my 3G ipod for music listening. I would've gladly traded it for a brand new or mint condition 4GB iPod Nano.

Meh...this is like a mechanic taking advantage of someone who doesn't know much about cars. It just doesn't seem right to me...

Why does everyone have to be so moral around here. I have seen many threads start off on one topic, then it just turns into a flame war over the right thing to do. Can we stop trying to make the OP feel guilty?

Agreed. It's not like the OP coerced the Marine! He wanted what he wanted.

(Although I did lash out in the Is Steve unwell? thread...:( )

I'm going to assume the marine in question wasn't completely dense because:

    1. He seems to know what a gigabyte is
    2. He seems to know what a nano is, that it is physically smaller and that it has less gigabytes than the bigger iPod
    3. His professional title

I'll give him the benefit of the doubt. I'm certain he had his reasons.

value is in the eye of the beholder.

just because the Marine -could- have gotten "more" for this iPod doesn't mean he didn't get what he wanted. For some, that is enough.

One would think Mrs. Grundy would have finally died in the 21st century...apparently she's got just as much presence as ever.
