I don't get it, to be honest. I didn't have the volume up, but going to a live concert to promote an MP3 player doesn't seem to be a very good marketing scheme. Anyone else see it? Have I missed another thread about it?

    A brown Zune.
I have some people who I don't like, I am giving them brown Zunes for Christmas.

I saw one last night. Wasn't all that amazed. I really don't see this thing going anywhere. The Zune couldn't compete against a CD player...

ROFL. That is the most ridiculous (yet simultaneously humorous) thing I have seen all week.

    What the heck!

M$ might want to come up with some other ads than that one. :D

The adverts should all feature a guy standing alone in the middle of a field, perhaps with his feet in a cow pat, holding his brown Zune and quietly whispering "Who wants to swap music?".

I like that bird advert though. RAAAAAAAAAAAWR! Pingapingapingapingadeedeedee. RAAAAAAAAAAAAAWR! Awesome to the max, +10.

Seriously, does anyone see this DMP even challenging the iPod. Kids will be getting this for Christmas and they're going to be disappointed as **** when they realize what the hell they got.

I've seen all the Zune ads now (from the official website), and have to echo the "WTF?" sentiment that most people seem to have. They seem to be trying too hard to manufacture "cool," but don't actually say much about the product itself. In fact most of these ads would go right over most people's heads, especially if they didn't already know what the Zune player was.

Some of them show the wireless sharing feature in action -- but again, unless you already knew about this player and this function, you wouldn't necessarily understand what was going on. They could have actually produced some really clever ads promoting this feature while making it seem essential. But... they didn't.

The "Welcome to the social" slogan is just embarrassing, but it's very possible some kids out there could fall for it, with sites like MySpace being so popular. However, the introductory Zune seems too expensive for the market they're trying to target (youth, who tend to favor nanos and shuffles). And once people buy it, and realize how bulkier, uglier, and limiting it is (can't play iTunes music, too hard to navigate, wireless only within 30 inches and then drains half your battery life), it's destined to die a quick death.

And it's a shame, really. I'd love it if there was another cool mp3 player alternative out there. I'm such an Apple whore, that I doubt I could ever be persuaded to buy anything other than an iPod. But the competition would be nice -- and might drive Apple to make quicker and cooler improvements to their own devices.

But Zune? It's just embarrassing... :(

I'm still laughing at that. Being "On The Social" here in Britain means you are on unemployment benefits.

I take it if Zune ever comes out over here, they'll be changing that slogan. :D

I've seen a couple of the Zune ads on TV. I think they're relatively funny, but if I didn't know what a Zune was, the commercials wouldn't give me any idea, and requiring somebody to go to a web address that's flashed on screen for a second in order to figure out what the heck it is you're advertising is probably not an effective marketing strategy.

The marketing droids would say you're not young and hip enough to "get it".

    :)

...so when's the brown nano coming out then? brown macbook? :D

Still going on with that then. Heh...

Yeah that Zune ad scares me. They're actually worse then the Xbox 360 ones. I didn't think that was possible.

This whole Zune thing is going to be one of MS's most monumental flops.

    Period.

No ipod? No iTunes? No ITMS?

    No dice.

Apple's iPod commercials really didn't give much information about the product, but at least they were relevant. The Zune ad linked above makes no sense to me. Perhaps I'm not getting it, but what's the point of a commercial that no one gets?

The commercials look bad. From what I've seen, they're just filming huge block parties in the middle of nowhere. Who's listening to mp3 players at a live concert?

Also, the things are huge. They've got a long ways to go to even start competing with Creative Zen products, let alone the iPod.

That describes the video slughead posted just right.

One one the comments for the Zune commercial said it's suppose to show the sharing feature the Zune has.

I saw a long Zune ad that played as a preview to the Borat movie. It was lame - the ad, not the movie.

I'm a 22-year old college student who loves music, has a fair amount of disposable income and enjoys new gadgets. Doesn't seem like I could be any more "in" their target demographic...

(Of course, I'm also a Mac user and somewhat of an MS-hater.)

One bird shares music with the other through wifi - fire symbolizes the transfer; transfer complete, the bigger bird has color and they now both rock to the same song - great marketing and creative at the same time.

Mind you I do too think MS has no taste or creativity, but honestly this commercial is nice.
MS did well, as long as you think different.
