So, I've recently become a mini dj for an small group of swingdancers on campus. I need more speaker power for my ibook that is relatively portable (plug in ok) but that I can also use at my dorm desk.

I have seen the Klipsch Pro Media THx system and the 2.1 GMX.

Do you recommend one over the other or another type?

Yup, agree with above.

Get a little powered mixer and 2 speakers for the dj work. They are made to lug around. Get something seperate for the dorm.

http://www.samash.com has decent stuff if your in the states. Long & McQuade if your in Canada.

Like the posters said, a PA would give you better sound for dance DJing. The DJ in my swing group lucked out and got a pair of Mackie powered speakers cheap on eBay, and we run his DJ deck and my iPod into those. But even cheap used PA speakers are hundreds of dollars for a pair, beyond the budget for many students.

If you're DJing for a small group in a small room, you might actually find a pair of beefy computer-style speakers that would be adequate for dancing and nice for your desktop. Go to Fry's or some similar giant electronics emporium and knock yourself out cranking the wares.
