Hey Guys. In the past few days while launching applications I have been experiencing Kernel Panic Attacks. This is happening on my new Core Solo Mini. This has happened about 5 times now. I get the following error:

I was reading some information on Kernel Panic Attacks and it seems like they happen after installing new USB Devices, software, or RAM. I just bought an USB Altec Lansing Headset Mic. that I have been using for a few days. I also installed Skype. No new RAM. I am running Disk Utility now to isolate any possible errors.

Which apps are you opening when it happens? Do they utilise your new USB mic? Does it panic if the mic is not plugged in? :)

Well, that could be the culprit. What kind of microphone is it??

Its not restricted to device issues

Its unlikely that this would really help you, but I use a program for molecular biology called Gene Construction Kit 2.5 (textco.com). I installed it and all appeared well. The next day when I tried to open it (the first time I tried opening it after restarting the computer), it initiated a kernel panic. Every time I try to open the program, it crashes the box.

This is on a brand new 17" MBP (1 GB RAM). I have no peripherals plugged in. The only programs I've installed are: Adobe CS suite, Office 2004, Endnote 9, Core Duo Temp, a few biology/chemistry widgets, and GCK 2.5. The kernel panics are completely associated with opening GCK 2.5.

FWIW, I also had a kernel panic while trying to shut the box down this morning. Apparently unrelated to aything else. I've only had this box 72 hrs.

schaef2493, does it happen if you start up Skype without the mic plugged in?

I have a feeling it won't panic, which means it's a problem with the mic. I went to the Altec Lanssing site and they don't mention anything about Apple or driver/firmware updates, which isn't promising. I'd maybe check if you can either get a replacement (may be a faulty mic) or a refund so you can use another type of mic. This is all assuming the machine won't panic when you load up Skype without it plugged in though. :)

Duderonimous, so many panics in such a short amount of time is not normal. In the few years I've been using Macs, I've had probably less than ten panics. Maybe take the machine back to Apple and see about getting a replacement or a fix. The machine is so new that troubleshooting it is probably pointless. :)

Why I hate the kernel panic:

It just seems so scary. It gives you a weird stomach feeling.:(
