I just had a kernel panic (I think). My computer froze and restarted, then told me to hit any key to reboot. I wasn't doing anything intensive or anything, just going through MR and then it crashed. Report attached below. Can anyone see what caused the crash?

Code:

If you get a screen that looks like this:
TS3742_01_KP-001-en.jpg
It's called a kernel panic. If it doesn't happen again, or very infrequently, you don't need to worry about it.
In most cases, kernel panics are not caused by an issue with your Mac. They are most likely caused by an issue external to your Mac. If the kernel panic doesn't happen again within a few weeks, you don't need to troubleshoot further.
If it does happen again, this may help:

So it's insomnia that caused it?

Also just happened again, this time while I wasn't doing anything, and pretty sure Insomnia wasn't open this time.

You had a kernel panic because during a filesystem operation a node that was not the header node contained a back-link reference to itself.

Basically, you probably have filesystem corruption and you should be running Disk Utility from the recovery partition.

I recommend you uninstall Intego Net Barrier. Antivirus apps have been known to cause problems on OS X, and OS X has a built-in firewall and malware protection. Macs are not immune to malware, but no true viruses exist in the wild that can run on Mac OS X, and there never have been any since it was released over 10 years ago. The only malware in the wild that can affect Mac OS X is a handful of trojans, which can be easily avoided by practicing safe computing (see below).

3rd party antivirus apps are not necessary to keep a Mac malware-free, as long as a user practices safe computing, as described in the following link.

Read the What security steps should I take? section of the Mac Virus/Malware FAQ for tips on practicing safe computing.

Uninstalled it and it crashed again. This time again while I was just sitting there. Wasn't touching it cause I was playing minecraft on my 360. Then I look over and see it just crashed.

You had a kernel panic because during a filesystem operation a node that was not the header node contained a back-link reference to itself.

Basically, you probably have filesystem corruption and you should be running Disk Utility from the recovery partition.

It's this. Not saying the anti-virus stuff wasn't messing with the OS to begin with but I'd do what he says.

Forgot to mention, that I did uninstall the netbarrier.

And I ran the repair, but I'll tell you in an hour if it worked.

I had a few semi regular kernal panics back when my Mac Pro's disk was going bad. Once I replaced it, the crashes went away. I think I had similar issues shortly after upgrading some RAM too. Crucial was good enough to replace it, and the problem went away.

So, in my experience, these are the result of faulty hardware.

Just crashed again after doing everything on that apple page. It's past 2 weeks but less than a month. Should I just get it replaced?

I'd start by taking it to Apple and letting them diagnose the problem. The solution may or may not involve replacing hardware.

Did you perform a Repair Disk Permissions or a Repair Disk in Disk Utility? It is very telling that for every single panic you have, this line remains the same:

hfs_UNswap_BTNode: invalid backward link (0x0000897b == 0x0000897b)

0x0000897b is the ID number of a particular node in your filesystem's B-Tree. The fact that this number does not change between panics is very telling.

Disk utility won't fix that.

Fsck should, and Disk Warrior will.

You want a replacement laptop for a software issue? The binary tree node structure is part of the filesystem, it's not hardware.

You can use the terminal to run fsck_hfs -Race and rebuild all three B-Trees associated with an HFS+ volume, provided that there is enough integrity to traverse the nodes. The command is built-in to MacOS X; you do not need to purchase or download any additional software.

However, I would do this when booted to the recovery partition or in single-user mode. You will need to look up the device special file associated with the volume you wish to repair. You can get this information from diskutil list. It will be of the form /dev/disk#s# with the # being numerals. For example, my boot volumes is /dev/disk0s2, so the command I would want is fsck_hfs -Race /dev/disk0s2.

Am in the recovery environment right now, and ran that command (fsck_hfs -Race /dev/disk0s2) since 0s2 was my volume where OSX was, and it said that the rebuild was requested but writing disabled.

Ok I've done everything in this thread and it has reduced them but I found the cause of the panics.

I have a .sparsebundle that I backup to on a SMB share. When I wasn't connected to the share all day I haven't crashed once. But when I connected to the share, mounted the bundle and backed up to it, it was when it started the backup that it crashed.

Any way to make it not crash? I mena, I have run multiple full backups to the bundle before...
