I just found my RAM has been maxed out with majority of my pie chart in activity monitor in the orange colour (active). I then see kernel_task using 1.16GB of virtual memory. Any idea what it is and what it does?. Safari is also using 1.64GB VRAM

I have Safari, iTunes, Messenger, Mail and Transmission open. (All intel apps)

I've noticed Kernel_task uses tonnes of virtual memory as well.

restart and see if anything changes.
