I am trying to set up a keyboard shortcut to sleep my Mac (something like Shift+Cmd+S) but can't seem to get it to work as it is not a command in an app.

    Any thoughts?

You could use the default: Command + Option + Eject.

Is there a keyboard shortcut to just put the display to sleep (on a Macbook)?

Get Quicksilver and set up a custom global keyboard command. For example, I set F8 to invoke Quicksilver and allow me to search through my entire iTunes library and play whatever music I select.

I'm sorry I'm still kind of a n00b with these here Macs, can you explain how to set up a keyboard shortcut in system preferences to put the display to sleep (not the whole machine)? Or show me how to do it through Quicksilver? I can't seem to figure it out... Thanks!
