I am looking into making one of these: http://www.macmod.com/content/view/210/2/
Now I am starting off by figuring out how I will get surround sound out of the laptop. One option would be to get a higher end laptop and just use the optical out. The other option is to get a FireWave. Is there any other option? What laptops support optical out?

I will keep you posted on how it turns out. Off to ebay I go.

The guy from the linked site just streamed his music to an Airport Express, which supports optical out.

I am not about to rip apart a MBP. I was thinking 600mhz range

That could be an option but it would be cheaper just to get a Firewave, as the surround system will be right next to it anyway......

haha I didn't see the link at first and thought you wanted to get optical sound to come out of your laptop not to actually rip the laptop apart ;)

Yeah the fact that the MB doesn't support 5.1 kinda sucks, that's the reason why I'm selling my z5500.

The MacBook does support 5.1 through its combo digital/analog port.
