I have an hp 1300 its a little more than $200 about $250 at www.newegg.com but its pretty good. Im in college and it works great, have another at home and my dad has one at his office hasn't giving any of us problems. I looked at the 1012 but decided on the 1300. With the 1300 its quick, graphics look good. What turned me is that the 1012 only supports windows 1300 does linux (unix), pc, and mac. Look for rebates I got 100 off from hp!
    hope this helps

I have the HP 1012, love it.. never had a problem. Its more portable that previous models, easy to set up to share with other macs, and the toner seems to last quite a while. I purchased mine around a year ago, and still haven't had to change it!

The 1012 supports Mac, the Laserjet 1000 which was the original "low-cost" laser printer from HP was PC only.

I have the 1012 and love it. It's fast and it gets medium use and the toner cartridge is still kicking after 7 months. I hope to set this up wirelessly with my Airport Express this weekend and hide it in a cabinet in a wall unit.

The 1012 is not capable of sharing using a AEBS or AX. The HP LaserJet 1200 and 1300 are. For an unofficial list of "compatible" printers try http://www.ifelix.co.uk/tech/1013.html, since Apple removed their list from the AirPort website!

Don't buy the AX if your primary reason is for USB printer sharing with your 1012! :)

I would disagree - I have been using my HP 1012 hooked to an AEBS for ~3 months now. Not a single glitch. As far as I remember all I had to do was follow standard procedures to set it up.

1012 the grayscale laser jet printer? There is also a 1012 Color Laserjet. What version of the driver are you running? OS version? I plug my 1012 into my AEBS or my AX and neither recognize the printer, running the latest driver from HP. I would be thrilled to get it to print wirelessly!

Yup the 1012 B&W Laser Jet. It works off my AEBS. Just got the AX last week to extend my network at home and have not tried that. Will give it a shot tonight. To be quite honest I don't know if I did have any issues when I tried to set it up. That was about 3-4 months ago. Have serious CRS syndrome :D

I am running latest OS. All firmware and software upgrades on AEBS and Airport.

Do you see the printer on your network at all?
Will give it a look over tonight and let you know.

    Update:
Checked that it works with AX too. Printed out a test page to confirm. My printer driver is 1.1.3 direct from HP's site. The download file is a combined set of drivers for 1150-1010 series. My platforms are 1.5GHz AluBook and 1.0GHz TiBook. OS X version 10.3.5.
Did a quick Google on the issue. Apparently it works flawlessly for some but not for others. Hope this helps. PM me if you need more info or need to discuss.
    Cheers!

Wow, interesting. I called HP tonight---The rep said it may or may not work, but HP doesn't officially support this printer with an Apple Extreme base station. I asked a friend of mine who used to work for HP, and he said that HP doesn't always use the same interfaces in every particular printer, even if it is the same model. So I dunno.

I don't know if deleting the printer driver is an option, but I've reloaded the software off of HP's website and tried it again with both my AEBS and AX. Still doesn't work.

Blah, I give up ;) I'm glad it works for you though!

Don't give up just yet. Try the following (if you have not done so already):
    1. Turn off AEBS
    2. Turn off printer
    3. Turn on AEBS and let it go through its motions
    4. Turn on printer and plug into AEBS
    5. From the Airport Admin Utility you should be able to see the printer
    6. If still not seen - reset the AEBS using the Airport Admin Utility (small button in top left corner I believe)

Let me know how it goes.

This a great little printer and the joys of wireless printing abound :D

    Good luck.

    I have the 1012

I have the 1012 and really like it. It is very fast and I got it for $148.00. Connecting to my G5 2ghz Rev. A was easy--just worked. Tried setting it up with my wife's iBook (10.3) and it sees it but is greyed out and I cannot select it as a printer. Strange. Maybe the iBook needs a newer driver?

I have a Samsung ML-1740 that I have been very happy with so far. I found it for $149.00 at Best Buy a few weeks ago plus a $50.00 mail-in rebate. I think it does a good job for $99.00 net!

Set it up this morning. HP 1012 works like a charm. Nice to store it away in the bottom cabinet of wall unit and gain the desk space and lose the wires.

Yeah, the best now is Buy.com for $129.00 no tax or shipping. Sounds good to me, just fish out a USB cable and your golden.

There's been a bunch decent printers coming out in the $100 price point with no rebates. Fry's had a Brother go for that much last week. I just got a HP 1500L which is a color laser printer for $250 after rebate yesterday. Scary that the consumables cost $600 (all toner carts and the drum) on that! It would be way cheaper for me to just buy another printer!
