Jury duty couldn't be voluntary, no one would do it for the $5 a day!
It is our duty as citizens. It is also our duty to do what is asked of us if we are unfortunate enough to have to serve on a jury...

The headline does a disservice to the reader and to the law. Juries have a responsibility to decide cases based on the evidence presented in court. When the panel is sworn in, it specifically swears to do this. The attorneys in these cases are merely trying to get jurors to honor their sworn obligations.

Very true. The head line shows yet again how worthless the media is becoming.

The use of the iPhone and other smart phone to browse the internet during a trial is going to increase mistrials. It is one thing to surf and read things that has nothing to do with the trail. Another to surf for facts about the case.

When you are select for a jury you knowledge is trap at that point in time. Anything you hear in the trail you are not allowed to go look it up to find out more information about it.

It is... just voluntarily don't register to vote, or get a Driver's License and in most states you will never get called to jury duty.

    Cheers,

ah but it near impossible not to get a DL or an ID card and be able to do anything in most states. You need that government ID card.

That argument is what I've been espousing for years. Times are a-changing.

    why?

its a small "price" to pay for the society we live in

we have it pretty dang good

to the topic, this is exactly why jurers arent allowed to leave rooms and what not, so they do not get outside info

screw the iphone, thats just flame bait

Or pay taxes, because I'm pretty sure some jurisdictions use taxpayer lists to select people for jury duty.

Only problem with not paying taxes in order to avoid a jury; is you're pretty likely to end up on the wrong side of a jury anyhow.. :)
