    hey-
so long story short- need to get an external hard drive
    ideally something w/ Firewire

    honestly- only need about 20GB

    any good ones out there?
looking to get a new drive

how much slower would a USB 2.0 HD be?

also- looking for good backup software-
prefer something that is free or really low cost-

    thanks!

you could always get yourself an enclosure from newegg.com and throw a hard drive in there yourself

i have a 160gig Maxtor One Touch that is great, but it was $200, if you dont need something like this then i would look into buy the enclosure and hard drive seperate, probably cheaper

as for backup software, Carbon Copy Cloner is great for backing up your whole system, and i know that Toast also has Deja Vu which will allow you to back everything up as well

i just recently bought the macally aluminum 3.5" enclosure w/ usb2 and firewire for about $40 on amazon. there is also a firewire only version available for a little less. it has given me no problems so far and installation was simple.

i would recommend buying a similar external enclosure, and snagging an internal hard drive from outpost or something. sometimes they have 160 gig seagate drives on sale for $50 after rebate. but you can buy a size suitable for your needs.

I have an OWC Mercury drive from www.macsales.com

They're known for their reliability and it hasn't failed on me yet. (got it early last summer)

I'm not sure what their smallest drive right now is though....

Don't know if this would interest you, but my friends dad got a 160 GB Western Digital USB 2.0 external HD from frys outpost for $109 after mail-in-rebates. I will check now to see if that deal is still there.
