hello, i am in yet more need of help in order to help a customer with a mail problem. this guy has an ibook g3 and uses outlook for it. he recently reached his limit in the email for the university and downloaded all the emails and transfered him to his ibook. now when he tries to open them it asks for the server, and the "mailbox name" i know i have the server right and as far as i know i have the mailbox name right. as i understand it is just his email address. but every time it gives an error saying that there is no network connection or the information is wrong.

my question is, is there something else it is looking for when it asks for a mail box name, or is there something else i can check. also, he wanted to know it there was a mail program other than outlook and other than mac mail that might be easier to manage and transfer. thanks in advance

How is he trying to open the downloaded messages? In Mail? Is he using Tiger?

If so, it sounds like Mail is trying to find a mail box (basically a mail folder) in OSX Mail format. Since it wasn't in Mail format, it can't read it.

If the goal is to use Mail, my recommendation would be to set up Mail with his account information and download the messages directly into mail. Once that's complete, use the Preferences to choose NOT storing messages on the server, go online and delete the messages from the server. This will free up the server and mail can be viewed from the hard drive.

If you want to try other programs there's Entourage (part of MS Office) or Thunderbird. Again, I'd get the program and download directly into that. MUCH easier than transferring.

Have you tried downloading, or are they already deleted off the server?
