I am a typographic design student, and am currently designing an imaginary mac magazine, but for the life of me i cant think of a good name for it. Anyone got any ideas? (aimed at 18 - 30 yr olds, covering all aspects of mac hard/soft wear and general news etc)

    Mac Slut.... :p :p

Actually I'd avoid anything with 'Mac' in the title, 'cos that's an over used cliche for Mac mags... heheh.

Tell us alittle more about how you envisage the magazine?? :)

Mostly because tech readers who don't know Mac won't read anything with Mac in it unless it says virus or shiitte batteries. All one word will be good for crossover website address.

    boardedwindows
    brokenwindow
    anotherway
    PCRelief
    PCFree
    escapePC
    PCXIT
    NonPC
    pc'doff

Less than obvious but you probably have the obvious ones.

You could call it the Bicycle Report. ;)

Seriously, though, I'm not sure. While iGav is right that 'Mac' in the title has been used a lot, I still think it's important to have there. I like going into a store and immediately being able to pick out all of the Mac magazines. B/c the Mac community is a pretty tight-knit, niche community, I think we all appreciate seeing the word 'Mac' on the magazines and that we tend to pick up every magazine that has 'Mac' in the title at least once.

I think the word still catches the eye and attracts the likely reader. Informative, descriptive, and endearing. Keep 'Mac' in the title.

If your imaginary Mac magazine is about every single aspect of the Macintosh world, it's harder to name than if it had more of a focus. But in fact it does have a distinguishing characteristic - being imaginary. And "imag" looks a lot like "imac". So how 'bout calling it something like Imacination or iMacinations or IMACINARY, with your clever design skills used to overlay the 'c' of the title over the 'g' of the word "imaginary"?

Another idea: Make the magazine's focus be on kids' use of Macintoshes (more focus on gaming, chat, music, cool gadgets, etc. and less on business software and servers) and name it Mack (MACs for Kids). A kids focus would also let you use a wilder design - more fun!

Got the "bicycle" thing, but think iBike would have been cooler if you're gonna use the old codename for the Mac... ;)

I would have just called the magazine "Fruit", though...

I actually started down this path

I looked into starting a pro-end mac user magazine a little while back, and after getting to the meat of distribution, I shelved the idea. I can put it together, and make it pretty, but getting it out to where it would make some money turned out to be either a "do it yourself and lose, or sell your soul and make it work" proposition.

Anyway - since it didn't go anywhere you're welcome to the suggestions: http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=33340

the links are dead now... but the content is still probably helpful.

MacPro was what I had settled on...

Some would argue that it's less embarrassing flicking through the top shelf than looking at the computer mag section. ;) heheh

The problem with using 'Mac' or 'i' in the title is that it's really banal, uninspired and lacking anything either approaching creative or original (which really goes against everything the Mac stands for). Just having the word 'Mac' in the title will likely alienate hundrds of thousands of your potential demographic purely on having that word in the title.

Not to mention that there is already countless Mac mags with almost identical content, identities and aesthetics (how many Mac mags use Apple Garamond or Myriad  ). Or how many people just rip the 'Aqua' look for pretty much everything... ;)

So what is going to make your mag stand out from all the others?? a couple of thoughts spring immediately to mind for me.

    • the name, 'Mac' is likely to alienate more than it's going to attract. come up with something original that doesn't immediately catagorise the magazine as being a 'tech' mag, there's already enough of those and you're unlikely to add anything new to the party.

    • don't have a monthly magazine, I'd make it quarterly, that way when things are slow such a magzine won't be filled with rehased information or editorial rumours that lack in substance as they have columns to fill.

    • don't market it as a computer mag. It'll only end up in the computer section, where most of the people who can get a girlfriend/boyfriend never ever look. heheheh

    • the aesthetic, consider cutting edge and counter culture style mags such as 'Sleaze', 'Dazed & Confused', 'Wallpaper', 'Blag', 'Very', 'Intersection', 'Shift', 'Visonaire' and if you can track some copies down, the Ray-GUn stable of 'RayGUN', 'Huh', 'Bikini' and 'Blah Blah Blah' all turned conventional magazine design on it's head in the way it dealt with editorial, journalistic and photographic content.

    • consider how cooler (less geeky) tech mags such as 'Wire', 'T3' and 'Edge' handle the content and imagery.

    • don't be afraid to use full bleed photography, or crop images. design and style are defacto. ;) especially in the hipster world of the coffee table chic.

You've got an opportunity here, to create something seriously stylish and original... it's be a shame if it ended up being just another ubiquitous 'i' mag. ;)

Well not only do I not get it, but I would have guessed that it was probably quite lame. :p

Anyway, iMag gets my vote. That, or "Macs and Girls" and have pictures of hot girls oogling over Macs. More of an attention grabber than Mac sluts.

nah, sorry, i don't get the bicycle thing either :(

iGAV ... you smart arse you, for some reason you remind me of Ace Rimmer right now  ;) whattaguy

yeah, what iGAV said is good...depends where you want to take it though, while that's all well and good, if you want a mainstream Mac magazine, i'm not sure it's something to think too hard about...

personally, i'd go the unconventional route. i remember when EDGE came out, it was so f***ed up in terms of computer/console magazines, it came in a black plastic bag, with a limited circulation (soooo damn cool i bought another copy and still have it unopened :D ) Mac Slut is good, and bad, which is good heh. Avoid going the way T3 has, it's a great magazine, but they started putting ok looking girls on the front cover, then got more circulation i would assume as the quality of the girls became a lot better, from $250/day girls to $2,500 models haha. i have a feeling that may have alienated some readers to be honest. there's a lot of great magazines out there, one i like is DWELL, which is all about houses, basically, but it's cool, and not too obvious.

as for the title, call it em or something. phonetically the first letter of Mac, and also throws out a hook for typography peeps, which is good for you no? easy to work with in terms of design for a logo, short which is good these days, one word, also good, and spells "me" backwards, which could also be a good thing to work into it.

for the content, keep it slick. maybe high fashion type stuff, you know, decent, good thick paper stock, glossy (or very matte, depending on the stock) printing, as iGAV said, don't be afraid of full bleed imagery, the mac is a great design tool, use that.

well there's my totally unprofessional two cents worth :)
i can help with proofs and scans though ;)
