mac os 9.1 and .doc files question...

    I have a iMac the older ones its the aqua blue color or whatever it has mac os 9.1 I believe thats what it is, anyways i have a .doc file which should be a document file and it wont open theres no program installed that can open it, I thought apple works 6 would but it doenst even support that type file format. How would I open that type of files on mac? thax...

    If theres a simple program to download free let me know.

    Well, AppleWorks should be able to open a .doc file... but I'm guessing that you most likely have the version that came with your system, I believe that would be AppleWorks 6.0.4. Apple has done a lot in making AppleWorks able to read Word documents.

    I suggest downloading the update to get AppleWorks up to 6.2.8. Its free and you can find it here.

    thinking way back to 9.1.......when opening a file that was created on another computer, sometimes it wouldn't open when you double clicked on it, but if you open a program, appleworks in this case, and then use the program's menu to navigate to the file and select it to open, then it would open and recognise it in the guarantees this will work for you though but i remember having to do that occassionally
