Well I just ordered a mac pro, stock config.

I was planning on buying extra ram through a 3rd party, but when I go to macsales.com to pick up some extra ram I see that the prices are through the roof.

Can we expect these prices to drop drastically within the month? Or am I better of ordering more ram from Apple?

    datamem has 1GB sticks for $189 ($378 to make a 2GB kit) - compare that to Apple's $700 for a 2GB kit!

You can't use that -- it's not FB (fully-buffered) RAM.

You're not going to get this RAM cheaply. Its not exactly mainstream. Newegg only has 1 item in stock that meets spec for the Mac Pro, and even its not guaranteed to work. Go with OWC. They stand by the Mac and have for many years. Excellent people at that company.

Apple also states that they have specially designed the heat sinks on the RAM to make the entire system run cooler. OWC guarantees that their memory is to that spec while no other company does. Seems like a no-brainer to me.

I have never had problems with memory from datamem.com -- Lifetime warranty too.

    I just ordered 2GB for $370 -- OWC is charging $560 and isn't available for a week.

Give it a little time, and memory prices will come down. With the release of the Mac Pro, a large number of people are out in force trying to find 3rd party memory. Supply and demand!!!

I have 2GB kit from datamem coming in today, so I am happy. They weren't the cheapest, when compared to possible newegg.com ram, but they had them in stock, and they guaranteed them to be 100% compatible and functional.

I need the RAM but I am going to wait a bit. Any educated guesses on how much the prices will drop or how long it would take to see a price drop that's semi-significant?
