Why is it all mac users are automatically declared stoners. Many times have people told me, Ohh mac users a loser, jsut a bunch of pot heads. Where did this sterotype originate. Stoners!

I haven't heard the "stoner" comment before. I've heard of: rich, ellitist, gay, stuck up, black sheep, artsy, and weird.

Maybe they're implying we would have to be stoned to use an OS with only 5% market share.

Heard a lot of myths and BS about Macs before but have never ever heard this before. Ever...

Sure you haven't been rolling your own recently?

I can't say I've ever heard this one either. Mind, it does make me think of that girl who was in the switcher campaign a few years ago (Ellen something or other?) and scurrilous rumours she might have been on something when she recorded her ad...

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. She was either on some sort of drug or just that stupid when they filmed the ad

A quick Google reveals her as Ellen Feiss. And I can assure you that my hazy memory is nothing to do with anything she might have been on...

So when did being a stoner become a bad thing? I am sure that much more than five percent of the world are potheads. More heads than mac users I gather.
However everyone I know who uses a Mac is a "stoner" or as I like to call them, decent human beings.

no, no i'm pretty sure it was me...

i've not heard this one specifically, but it doesn't surprise me: stoner is just a few shades off from the creative/gay user stereotype. And when you're all three, it's like a company making products just for you :D

The true story behind that is that she had been at school all day, then went straight from there to the shoot. She was tired, and was on allergy medication, so was admittedly a bit drowsy and out of it. (Don't remember where I read that... Maybe a Scott Kelby book?)

Ugh... I've met some stoners who were decidedly NOT decent human beings. A small percentage to be sure, and most either had or moved onto other drug problems, but still. Some people just suck no matter how stoned they are.

Anyhoo... saying mac users are all stoners is as idotic as claiming that blacks are all lazy, or that women can't drive.

BTW, I've heard that all PC users are conformists. :p

the macintosh development team is infamous for all being a group of drug users, and the macintosh itself was more of a "hippies" vision than that of it's counterpart M$ (Bill was said to be a reclusive stoner, who knows, the development team for M$ was viewed as more straight-laced, again who knows).

the macintosh is designed for artists and creative persons, many of whom use drugs. i smoke pot, i use an apple, therefore you all smoke pot.

To make her even wierder they break up what she says and they rearrange it if you know what I mean so it seems she totally random and messed up.

In the words of Travis Bickle circa 1976:

"I don't push never have pushed..."

However, I'll never turn down a toke and would prefer one over a whiskey, glass of wine or a Sierra any day - provided the time and camaraderie are right.

Amazing how the rhetoric of Harry Anslinger is still alive after 70 years. All that reefer madness fear with the usual consequences - mental weakness, societal outcast, family problems.

I'd call it stereotyping. It's absolutely ridiculous to label someone based on their computing preference. I think you'd find a well rounded set of folks using Macs from all different backgrounds and walks of life. Macs are appreciated for many different qualities that many interest a variety of people. I think that people like to label Macs as being only used by "insert stereotypical group here" persons. I think it's an attempt to dismiss the brand as a whole rather than trying the products for their merits.

It irritated me when an old friends said to me this weekend over the phone, "I never knew you to be the artsy type." No... I'm the I don't want to screw around with my computer for all hours on end trying to fix it while I could be doing more interesting things.

Was there more to the ad than the switch story? I can't believe that she got so much exposure from one picture on the apple site... was there a commercial or something?

edit:Okay, I goggled it and found a website and watched all the switch ad's. Two things: This girl is really weird and.. Will Ferrell rocks!!! :D "My name is Will Ferrell, and I'm a porn actor."
