ok, bizarre...but it supports what I was thinking about Apple support for SpeedStep (and I've tested this - it works)

according to cryptonome and increw.com, if you remove the MacBook battery, the CPU will throttle down to 1Ghz. Please check the site for a good explanation.

I'm currently testing for its effect on temperature and welcome others' observations on this.

I haven't found the speed drop to affect general usage or perceived performance.

additional note -

now I've found that it does not change from 1Ghz. Does not seem to matter what you do, no change.
