I found several threads on slow internet, but the one that came closest to my problem was about (snow)leopard, ( whilst I am using lion.
The problem may also be like this (, I don't know, quitting mail dit not solve the problem.

Here's the problem, my download, browse and streaming speed is very low, I'm hardly able to wach a youtube movie. This problem occured one a two weeks ago, before everyting was fine. I have a 15 inch MacBook Pro, running 10.7.2. Our home network consists of a modem with router and a time capsule for backups. All our mac's are connected to internet by wifi. When my MacBook is turned off internet on the other devices is much faster. When I ran a network diagnostic tool, it gave the result shown in the attachments. When checking my dns in preferences, it only showed one dns-address wich was greyed out. Also mail (icloud) had some issues with sending emails. I don't know how these things relate to each other, nor if they're relevant. Is there anyone who knows how to fix this. Thanks in advance.

Only thing that pops to mind that would affect all other devices is speed your mac is connecting to the Wifi at.

1 antenna wifi access points default to the slowest device connected. So, if you connect to an access point at "G" speed, everything else on that network drops down to G.

if you connect at "B" speed, likewise, everything else drops to "B" speeds.

I'm not sure how on the macbook to confirm what connectivity you're getting, but it might be something to look into.

Thank you for your reply LordVic.
I'm connected to (B/G), other devices in the house are connected to (N).

The problem is being solved by restarting all Devices on the network, the router, the other computers, the modem ect. My MacBook now actually is faster on the internet than the other computers on the network.

    this will help

I've had this same issue with my macbook pro 15 2011 running OS 10.7.2. It was driving me nuts and spent hours with my ISP tech support. I finally realized that none of my other computers, both mac and pc were having these internet speed issues UNTIL I turned on my macbook pro. After doing several tests with the laptop on and off and wifi on and off if finally dawned on me that something was eating up the bandwidth on my laptop and causing a bottleneck in my wifi signal. I immediately went into iPhoto and turned off Photo Stream in the preferences. This was indeed the culprit to all my problems. Photo Stream sucks the life out of your wifi and your internet connection. Try this. I guarantee it will solve a lot of your issues. Good luck

I've spent the last two days trying to troubleshoot the slow internet on my 2012 MBP. After messing with caches, DNS settings, it turns out that Photo Stream was the culprit. Things are zipping along now that I've turned the bandwidth sucking Photo Stream off! Thanks for the tip!
