Hey guys... I just tried plugging my headphones in and I'm not getting sound in them... the sound continues to play through the notebook's speakers.

Is there a setting I need to change or that may have been changed accidently?

There is no software setting I'm aware of that would do that, so one of three things is going on:

    1) You accidentally plugged it into the sound input port, instead of the output one.

    2) There's something wrong with the jack on the headphones, so the MB isn't recognizing that you have them plugged in.

    3) You have a bum headphone jack. That would really suck, but unless you did something like yank the cable at an angle to damage it, it'll be covered under warranty.

This might sound odd... but did you push them in all the way? I was worried something was awry when I didn't get audio through my headphones... until I added a little pressure and it clicked it that tiny extra bit.

Can you try with another pair of headphones. Did these headphones work before with other devices? I agree with Makosuke, probably one of those three, not software. My guess would be #1  , no offense. I do it all the time. That and look for my glasses when theyre on my head.

how would you feel if you went to a genius bar with this problem and they showed you the right port to plug it into you would almost want to never go to the apple bar again

Actually, I should have mentioned this as the most likely thing--it's a pretty tight jack, and although if you look at it you can tell that the plug is sticking out a little when it's not all the way in, it's pretty easy to not push hard enough.

At least, that's the case with my iPod earbuds, which is all I've got handy right now.

USB headphones no sound - weird solution

hi, i'm not sure if this helps for headphones that plug in with a stereo jack but i have USB headphones (a headset for talking on skype, makes me feel like a telesales person), when i plug my phones into my CrapBook Pro it cuts sound on the computer speakers and plays nothing on my headphones.

weird solution for this is to go to Sound in system preferences, select your headphones obviously, but then click the mute button on. when you click it off suddenly sound plays in the headphones.
i have to do this everytime.
could be i need a USB upgrade or something?!

secretly i hope to discover another software update that fixes this, since a last update made my fan blow like bananas for a few seconds, afterwhich my machine has been running slightly cooler. by that i mean it's not the temperature of the sun anymore. good for frying breakfast on my trackpad while in the office early.
