    So,

With MacBytes, I think we can do some interesting things....

I know at least one person is interested in photoshop contests... well - we'll see about that.

But even a simple caption threads would be fun.

Link to a Mac-related photo, and people respond with their captions.

    Other ideas welcome.

Hahaha, oh the potential of that is great.

How about photo/desktop related stuff. We've got plenty of talent on the forum here we could have a monthly photo contest - you'd have to rate them and then take the highest and maybe do a poll at macPolls.com ;)

    yep - lot of potential.

Let's start small - and build.

At this point, I'm open to suggestions for a tech-related photo for a caption thread.

I'm behind the photography captions idea, I'm sure I'll be able to contribute to that!

I have a picture of a 7 storey high 12/17inch powerbook ad but, alas, lens flare ruined it.
    It's been taken down since...

    Here it is: :(
(I know it looks weird, I changed the contrast levels around the ad)

I don't think the lens flare ruins it at all... ;)

I had to do a double take then I thought it was the 'Global Multimedia Interface' on the side of the Home Super Club in Leicester Square, London....

Thinking about it, that'd be a great place for Apple to advertise!!

What about something ala "where is the ut2k3 demo" or "assboat" if someone know what i mean, those threads are always funny.

A single photo or something photoshopped? There is a lot of 'tech' out there, anything particular, or is it one of those things that you'll know it when you see it?

    Not necessarily photoshopped...

Sounds like fun, we have a lot of really creative people around here that would make such a contest or thread about a picture fun.

So should we post them here or send them to you?

This reminds me of the weasel/beaver/animal 'tar where we filled in the 'x'.

arn -- I think you should dedicate the site to letting people post their artwork, each with it's own completely unmoderated thread in which people tear it apart without any mercy or sense.

    Oh, wait, that's been done...

I want to know, how much bandwidth are you talking about using here? You'll have to put it in some relative terms for us non-webmasters who have little clue how much bandwidth a site requires for whatever traffic you are anticipating...

    Not sure the question?

How much bandwidth is MacRumors/Bytes/Forums using right now? Or how much to create a photo upload site?

I think he might be asking how much of the current bandwith would be used to support the picture gallery type-thing.

It sounds like a great idea to me.

Sort of reminds me of spymac - except without the stupid pointless pics.

I don't know how much bandwidth it would take... though presumably a fair amount.

It all depends on the traffic on those pages and how many photos etc.... I presume the bandwidth required by Spymac for their photo gallery is significant.

This site (macrumors/foums) currently burns close to 600GB/month -- and it's not even very image intense.

That's not to say a selective ability to upload images might not be entertained... especially for specific things - such as photoshop submissions etc...

    600GB per month!
    Without image forums!

Yoiks, that's a lotta bandwidth to and fro MacRumors, I'd be amazed with your ISP, not to mention those two servers...

I was really asking how much BW you thought was realistic to dedicate to MacBytes -- that would give me (or us) a better idea of what would be feasible ideas and what wouldn't. The benchmark of 600GB/mo for MacRumors helps, though, definitely.

I was thinking along the lines of come creatively-geared stuff. Still grinding my gears...

BTW, is there a way us MacRumors regulars with broadband can help support the bandwidth in a semi-simple/low-hassle manner, or would that require full mirroring?

Aside, of course, from contributing to the site, which I personally intend to do as soon as I have $25 bucks to spare...

You're talking about being an ultrapeer. I don't know of any way to do this with websites, just peer-to-peer networks like Limewire... May be possible tho...

The best way would be to donate money towards extra bandwidth... You could also host your own images, if the bandwidth wasn't enough to choke you--

yeah the only way to help bandwitch is:
    1. Donate
    2. Host some part of the site on that persons computer.*

Note 2 would really be impossible because its a main site not a dis-conjoined site...

It is a central body not split up.

btw, I am still annoyied at the secercy around mac-bytes.

Its another mac news site, really.
