Maybe Apple's using "viral" marketing (get it? It's a dual use of "viral" - one meaning the term "viral marketing", and the other a reference to computer viruses) - whatever it is, it seems to be working, since Apple's developing an army of switchers they can deploy in their marketing scheme (mostly by people submitting switch stories to Apple, but also by switchers telling others making them potential switchers too).

I think "word of mouth" would be one of the best forms of advertising there is. it is also self propagating, it just takes a little while to get going.

The brand awareness of the iPod will pay off for the Mac platform slowly. But big.

Remember that Mac's low marketshare isn't from people LEAVING the Mac platform. It's from people joining it--but more slowly than they're buying Windows. That's a very different and less serious problem in the long run.

And there's a real one-way effect on Apple's side: a few people may switch from a current Mac to current Windows and be happy (I've never heard of it personally). But a LOT of people are very happy with the reverse. People aren't likely to switch back. (Yes, I know there are also people who use both--not everyone's a Switcher.)
