MacRumors, having just celebrated its 7th birthday, has reached yet another noteworthy milestone: the 100 thousandth forum registration.

Dates of previous membership count milestones:
Jul 2002: 10,000 members
Aug 2003: 20,000 members
Feb 2004: 30,000 members
Sep 2004: 40,000 members
Apr 2005: 50,000 members
Oct 2005: 60,000 members
Mar 2006: 70,000 members
Aug 2006: 80,000 members
Nov 2006: 90,000 members
Feb 2007: 100,000 members
Not all of these members are still active, of course, but it shows that the news, rumors, and discussions at MacRumors have continued to attract a larger and larger audience.

Once again, we thank our members for their participation, and for making MacRumors a primary Internet destination.

Uh... looks like we're about 150 members short of 100,00, Q.

Member numbers, MacRumors statistics numbers, and Members List numbers will all be slightly different due to differences in how they count things. Members have been banned, have been accorded guest status, have registered but never confirmed their registration via the e-mail message they received, etc. But member numbers is the least stringent method of determining the number of members we've had, and that has reached 100,000.

We'll of course have additional parties when the forums front page reaches 100,000 and the Members List reaches 100,000...we really like to have parties around here. :D

Obviously you're not a golfer.
so in terms of rumor maketshare, where does that put us? do we now account for more than 5% of the rumor forum members in the world? how are we doing in the educational rumor forum member marketshare?

What percentage of these 100,000 members do you reckon are active? Based on a quick sampling of the membership list, I'd guess something on the order of 1-2%. A remarkable percentage never post at all, something like 80%.

We haven't tried to track "active" users. If we did, I would consider a member active if they visited the site within a certain recent time period, whether they posted or not. We have members who joined earlier this year and haven't visited since, while other members joined in 2000 and still lurk regularly.

Why does the member list show 86622?
The Members List includes members from only certain membership classes. It excludes not only banned members, but other groups as well, such as members who never completed the registration process, and those who are still in the process of registering.

So, the list includes 13,378 either naughty or negligent associates, too? And some say we're exclusive. Pshaw.

Why are we celebrating a 100,000 then? Shouldn't we wait until the member list actually shows 100,000? I mean considering those are not really active or even registered members.

I don't mind if we celebrate again when the main forum page shows 100,000 members, and yet again when the Membership List reaches 100,000. Milestones are arbitrary points based on round numbers, and member numbers are the easiest to understand and track.

To be precise, we have had 100,000 people begin the MacRumors registration process.

Some forum systems require that you register to read the forums. Imagine how much higher our membership count would be if we had that requirement.

You mean how this one was over 5 years ago? ;)
Back in the year 0 (on the MacRumors time scale), "Guest" members could post and a different forum software package was used. Maybe somebody will write a book or make a movie based on the thrilling history of these forums.
