    Hi all,

We're going to do a dry run of the MacRumorsLive system on Sunday, Jan 8th at 5pm EST. 10pm GMT.

The event will start at 5pm as if we were doing an actual transmission. We'll be transcribing an older Steve Jobs Keynote (MWSF 2005).

All we need are people to watch along, make sure it all works right.

    http://www.macrumorslive.com

also we'll be testing the IRC system as well.

The main thing that needs checked is to ensure that all the different methods of providing the information work ok, giving the same updates, and there are no problems with different browsers or computers. We won't be able to test how it copes with load unfortunately, due to the sheer numbers involved on keynote day.

There are two primary pages on macrumorslive.com - the web updates and the Java IRC page. People who know what they are doing can use the IRC servers directly using the info arn posted (but on the day of the keynote use irc.macrumorslive.com and not krono, mrlive can cope with a lot more users). Everyone else can have two browser windows open, one for the web updates and one for the Java IRC client. You don't necessarily need to watch all the time, but leaving the windows open will help.

How it works should be obvious once it's actually online :)

I read that article, but I still don't understand fully what it is, and what it'll be doing the day of the keynote.

IRC is a chat protocol, allowing groups of people to chat online. It pre-dates MSN Messenger, AIM etc. and is slightly different, but the basics are similar. For the keynote you can join an IRC chatroom and see the same updates that will be posted to the website but in real-time, no reloading required.

If you don't know anything about IRC you can download the MRChat application (link on the Guides page), which is pre-configured to join the MacRumors chatroom, or use the Java applet that is on MacRumorsLive site. Or, just ignore it and look at the web page, you won't miss out on anything, it'll just be delayed very slightly. :)

So during the keynote, only those who are there will be posting? And the rest of us will just watch?

There are two chatrooms, one is moderated which means that only one person can speak, and they will provide the updates, but there will also be a second channel where you can discuss what is happening.

MRChat can only view the updates, not the discussion, so you'd need to use a fully-featured IRC client or the Java applet (which isn't perfect either, but better than nothing).

Not sure if having the other window open and auto-refreshing is leading to me getting lots of 'Failed to open page' messages. Link works as soon as I refresh it...

I get those fairly often in Safari, especially when clicking in from new posts. I think it's Safari being naughty. It doesn't seem to have anything to do with the keynote thingy.

Ran just fine for me in Safari! Now I just have to wait another *checks widget* 1 day 18 hours and 38 minutes :D

    Hope the system holds up!
