I finally getting around to set up portable home directories on my mini server running 10.8. I run into a problem right at the start and can't seem to find the answer anywhere. At the server in the file sharing tab the option to "Make available for home directories" is grayed out.
I can't figure out why. Can anyone help or point me to a good step by step instruction site.
    Many Thanks

Finally figured it out. I had a bad DNS setting.

Would you be kind enough to share the details ?

I have the same problem and really don't know what to do as changeip checkhostname returns a normal response.

    Found Solution - Replica

I was digging through Apple forums and found this from Mountain Lion:

I bound my file server as a replica and I was then able to "Make available for Home Directories."
