Here in the office, we sometimes move around to conference rooms or to other workstations. Currently, you would see people moving about in the office with laptops precariously on hand with the lid half open.
This is because closing the lid disconnects us from the VPN. Thus we are disconnected from the network. If for example we are checking out code from SVN or transferring a file over the network, that stops.
I think safer for us to be able to close the lid and move swiftly than walk around balancing the laptop on one hand while we try to open the door to a room.
Basically, having the option to close the lid without disrupting the processes on the computer would be a great convenience.
