I've found that on the iPhone 5, if you add 20% to the height and 75% to the width of the device, (so 1136x1363px) .... when you unlock the device, the center 640x1136 is featured. The space around it is only shown after movement.

I'm creating my own wallpapers now. Anyone else found any other formula/algorithm for this?

Hmm, actually —
Even at this size (which seems to fit) ... it's hard to get crisp graphics. Text is always very soft as the background moves around.

Has anybody been able to figure out how to make nice backgrounds that move or are animated, AND crisp?

On iPhone 5 I found that 748x1408 works well.

I deciphered this by making an image that was 640x1136 with a 200x200 square in the middle. By measuring how many pixels the square got scaled to.

I gave up on wallpaper on iOS 7. Unless I am crazy in the first few betas I had no problems with wallpapers. And somehow on one of the new betas, it seems to now zoom way I mean way into the wallpaper. Without being able to size and resize it. I hope they fix this. But until they do, I just use the default live wallpaper.
