As previously announced, Rockstar Games' hit Max Payne has launched on iPhone and iPad for $2.99. [Direct Link]

The game, originally published in 2001, is a third-person shooter focused on fugitive DEA agent Max Payne. Payne becomes a one-man vigilante, going after the mob, drug dealers and many others after his wife and daughter are murdered. The game uses graphic novels with voiceovers as cutscenes and was the first game to feature bullet time effects from The Matrix.

Supported devices on iOS include the iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPod touch 4, iPad 1, iPad 2 and the new iPad.

It's an 11 year old game ported to a small platform (presumably done because it's easy money). What is The Verge expecting? I played it on PS2 a couple years ago: amusing, but not the leading-edge content it was when it came out in 2001. At $3, I'll get it for sentimental reasons - like the bulk of what I assume is the primary intended audience.

So here's what The Verge says:

"Max Payne Mobile is an impressive recreation of one of the best action games ever made and offers a nice prelude to the release of Max Payne 3 next month. That it's just 3 bucks for a Universal app is icing on the cake."

I wouldn't have equated that to "not so good."

They do say there is an intrinsic problem with shooters on a touchscreen. But they also say that Rockstar dealt with that by providing a multiplicity of ways to manipulate things, so that each user can find his own technique; which apparently worked for the reviewer.

Don't think so far, but I'm hoping for an update on that down the road.

I wouldn't hold your breath. GTA III got an update and it's still lacking iCloud support. If any type of games need it, it's definitely GTA III and Max Payne. I really dislike having to pick a platform to play it on.

You're right about GTA III and I couldn't agree more with you about choosing between platforms. I wish more game developers would start implementing iCloud support in their games, and even on Mac games as well.

Does anyone know how to enter cheats? I'm trying to skip Part II prologue when he's in his house. I keep falling off the "blood" maze. This is when the sensitivity of the touch controls sucks.

Once you fail, they allow you to skip it without cheating. On the death screen, it should have a button that allows you to do so.

Personally, I persevered and did it without skipping. I guess I'm a masochist. :)

Bought it, played for a few minutes. Just don't like games like this on the touch screen. Does this support the iCade Mobile, I wonder...?

I started playing this on iPhone, and got slightly annoyed with the fiddly controls, but wanted the nostalgia so I bought the Max Payne pack on Steam. £9.99.

I hope it supports Xbox 360 controller.

Suffers from the usual 'need three thumbs to play' problem most shooters have on the iPad.

I've got it, and since i last played it in 2003, it's brilliant. A few lags when massive explosions are being rendered, but brilliant.
    But..
it definitely needs some kind of joypad. Running and shooting, then bullet time, it's crazy trying to do this on a touchscreen, i find myself accidentally turning round instead of pressing the fire button.

Hopefully Max Payne 2 will arrive soon! :)

I dont understand why people play games like these on their phones. It can be difficult to play without proper dedicated controls and you really dont get a fun enough experience. I tried playing a couple of 3d games like the GTA 3 port and HALO copy from gameloft but was really disappointed. I prefer casual yet challenging games with simpler gameplay mechanics more suited to a touch screen device.

    Enjoying this game 100%

Just wanted to let anyone interested know that I am really enjoying this game 100%. The controls are very good and customizable. Even though it is just a port it runs fluently without lag and is just as fun to play as the pc version was.

My only complaint is that once the game got stuck in a loop at a cutscene resulting in the savefile being damaged so it reverted to my previous savegame. The level was fun though so I wasn't to annoyed.

This game really brings loads of memories back and being able to play it anywhere anytime just adds to the fun. Nowadays one does not have the time to game for more than an hour at a time so I find that casual gaming on iOS is the way to go. If they bring more old games in this way to iOS I'm sold.

I would buy this again and again and again.

One reason is nostalgia. We played it thru before some 5-10 years ago, and $3 makes it easy to do it again. No need to learn a new game, just get used to new controls to re-tread what was enjoyed before.

All those FPS for iOS are the same except for different graphics. I refuse to buy any more.

In common with many here, I bought it purely for nostalgia....It really doesn't work well as a touch screen offering though, and since I refuse to use a BT KB with my iPad, it was a little disappointing really. At £1.99 it didn't break the bank though...I guess the younger generation are more accustomed to using touch screens for games like this, but how anybody could play it on a phone is beyond me...I may play it from time to time, but the dedicated iPad games are better thought out, and far more suited to touchscreen operation.

I really wanted this as I loved the game but over 1GB for an app is unacceptable for me. I only have 16GB iPhone.
