V_Ray for Maya found via "vray maya", but if you want them for free (you don't really tell):

Maya is a modelling and texturing and animation software, mental ray is a renderer (3D raytracing software), which can be added to various 3D applications like Maya and 3DS Max and maybe even Softimage, as those four applications are owned by Autodesk.
Thus Maya and mental ray can't be really compared, as Maya has much more features, thus it is obviously "heavier".

vRay is another renderer, which can be added to 3DS Max and Maya and other 3D modelling/animation software.

What exactly are you looking (or not) for?

    Thanks for that break down....

I have been a lightwave 3-d for a long time....and up until this year(october) my job switch us to maya, so that all of out facilities are on the same program. So I am teaching my self Maya(osx) 2011. And I do a lot of interior design, And Mental Ray is slow....I just wanted to focus on learning the program but now that Im a bit comfy with it, I need to make my progress a bit faster if possible. So I am looking for some plug in that will make it a bit faster than mental ray. I hope that makes sense to you.

    Thanks

It makes sense, but I'm not deep into this material anymore. I was around 2000, when 3D Studio Max was still 3D Studio Max and the brazil renderer promised something. Why don't you head over to CreativeCow, as that board is much more orientated on CGI.

I think it will be more about researching and fine tuning your render settings in an effort to begin speeding up that process.

Yeah thats what I was thinking....But as a begginer I didnt want to mess around with the settings too much but I guess that is how we learn. Thanks a lot for the reply
