    Hi there

My first post, so play nice :)

Am about to buy a MB Pro, and have a couple of questions:

-- I am stumped on the question of whether to go with the glossy screen. As I see it, a glossy screen makes the reproduces colours better, but could be a problem in outdoor sunlight, whereas a matt screen is the opposite. Can anyone share their experiences with the screens and recommend which one I should get?

-- Leopard- the guy in the Apple Store London said it won't be out until late Summer... what are you guys hearing? Any news on pricing?

That's all for now - would appreciate your views

    thanks

If you can afford it, get the 17 inch. Your eyes will love you.

With regards to the screens, i'd suggest checking them out at one of the stores - even better if you know someone with one (they may let you take it outside in the sun etc).. I've found that for what i use my MBPro for, the screen that i chose is best for it. My previous machine was an Acer with a glossy, and that was cool for what i did as well...

As for Leopard pricing, i wouldn't know.. As you haven't got the lappy yet, you'll either be waiting until it's out (Leopard), and get it with the MBPros they'll be selling at that time, or pay the upgrade fee when it comes out (Tiger currently retails for $129 on the apple site)...

2007 looks like a year for (amongst other things) brand new mobile pcs based on Intel's new platforms. Apple Inc is due to release Leopard, and people also expect the new platform for mobile intel-based lappys. So definitely new OS plus maybe new platform. If you wanna jump into the first revision of a new hardware platform, you can wait and get the new machines when they come out. If you want the new platform but don't wanna get caught out with any potential problems, you should wait even longer, at least until they've ironed out any potenital problems with 2007_Rev1_BrandNewMBPro & also Leopard. If you can't wait, and have the cash, i'd say buy a good-spec current MBPro, and slap Leopard on it when it's out - simple!!!

Take a flashlight to the store

What I would suggest is taking a flashlight to you with the computer store. If you focus a mini mag light to a small beam, and shine it around a screen, you can get a good idea of what the sun would look like.

You might look a little stupid, or odd, but it's worth the peace of mind that you are making the correct decision.

I originally had a 17" with a glossy screen and the glare from my office environment lights and from the lights in my house was too much for my eyes to handle over extended periods of usage. IMHO...the matte screen is much easier on the eyes. If you can control the lighting around your MBP, then the glossy screen may be an option.

I personally prefer a matte screen. However, I had a MB for a minute and its glossy screen wasn't too much of a bother, even if direct sunlight would shine from behind me and onto the screen. I didn't see a lot of glare.

I'm assuming Leopard pricing will be similar, if not the same, as Tiger's. ($129 retail, $69 edu)

I say you should go with the matte screen, both my sister and my father have glossy screens on their laptops and I think it's terrible. I have a matte screen on my MBP and I will never go glossy, I am also into graphics design so that influences my decision on glossy vs. matte but I would go matte even if I wasn't into graphics design.

hey guys... thanks for your replies

its a tough choice. I guess my key concern is that I can view the screen should I decide to go down the park on a sunny day (I live in London, so that would be, like, twice a year :))

I dont think i'll be using it for long periods..

    very close to a glossy.....

Would the glossy screen be like an ipod video screen, as far as glare and color contrast? I'm asking because my ipod is unwatchable in the sun as far as glare is concerned.

I have a glossy screen (on my external). Depending on the wallpaper and lighting, I can see myself in the damn thing as vividly as any mirror.
