I close the lid, and watch the little led on the front click on. It stays on for 30-40 seconds before it finally starts pulsing, which would indicate it was asleep.

This strikes me as far too long. Any ideas?

it just has to take whatever time it needs to close processes and get ready to sleep, i think the time vary on what you were doing just before putting your laptop to sleep :D

Doesnt it store everything that's running into RAM?

and 30-40 seconds is not FOREVER.

yeah, I noticed the same thing moving from a 1.25Ghz PB to a MBP. At some point Apple has changed sleep characteristics - it saves both to RAM and to the harddrive (instead of just to RAM). Takes longer, although if your battery dies you won't lose data.

I found out about this (and a way to modify back to the older "quick sleep") here:
