Okay, so I need a backpack/messenger to put my laptop in as well as books. Out of all the laptop backpacks/messengers I've found I really like this one: http://www.jansport.com/js_product_detail.php?cid=30&pid=TX47
Its a Jansport Modus. It is a messenger/backpack/brief all in one. Its also the best looking backpack I've seen. Now...it says the dimensions of the laptop it can hold are 13.5" x 11" x 2"...the MBP's dimensions are 14.1" x 9.6" x 1"...now is there anyway it could still fit, despite the half inch difference in width? I wouldn't know anything about these, as this will be my first laptop/laptop carrying case, and I was wondering if it would still fit(tightly, obviously)...can anyone speak from experience? If not, can anyone point me in the direction of a similar 3 in one laptop carrier that can hold the MBP? Thanks...

A half inch is a lot....I don't think it will fit. I might suggest you buy a neoprene sleeve of some sort (check out Inquest sleeves)- they are nice because they protect your MBP without advertising loudly that you have a notebook computer in your bag. I have one of those sleeves and just use a normal backpack and it works fine...both are black so it's color-coordinated!

its going to be hard to fit a MBP into a backpack snuggly. i have a jansport bag which could fit my old 15.4" toshiba but not the MBP cos it was longer. so i got a sleeve/protector from shinza.com Link and stuffed the MBP into that case before putting it into my backpack. works better this way since the MBP is quite the long laptop. good luck!
