I recently bought a MBP C2D - just when it was released.

Waited a while to get it, when it arrived it was great. But after two weeks, without any mishandling (if anything, I've been too careful with it), the button you press to open up the monitor has stuck. It won't bounce back to position, and so I can't close shut the screen.

Is this a known problem? And does anyone know how to fix? I did some research on it, but could not find anything concrete.

I have sent it to a warranty repair shop (I'm in Ireland, but the machine is from the US), but it would be good to know how to fix this should it happen in a year's time.

Also, my metal belt buckle slightly scratched the display release button and there are a few nicks to the left and right of it on the body. Can I look forward to paint peeling any time soon?

Sounds like a rare issue. It's most likely that something is stuck in there. The tiniest thing could prevent it from bouncing back. I once had a grain of rice somehow under a keyboard of an old iBook. It was preventing one of the keys from depressing. I have no idea how the heck it got in there either as I am careful too! Maybe someone was snacking when they built it and it rattle around until find a nice place to rest under a key? No sweat though, they will sort it out for you.
