I will be upgrading the ram on a mbp that currently only has 512mb. I don't have enough of a budget to buy 2x1gb sticks. Would it be better to buy a 1gb stick (with the ability to upgrade to 2gbs later on) or buy a stick of 512mb so that both slots have the same amount (which apparently gets you a speed boost). Thanks

Buy 1 GB stick. 1x1GB+1x512MB will be faster than 2x512 and make it easier/cheaper to upgrade to 2 GB later on.

Matching RAM is overrated. It's always better to go for more RAM rather than matching pairs when the slots are so limited, like this. :)
