I'm very curious if they are all that way. Mine is darker on the left one third. To the right of that it's quite even. I notice it mainly when I have solid colors, but also with lighter-colored textures since the dark parts show the texture more and the brighter parts show them less. Quite irritating when the same color/texture looks very different depending on where it is on the display.

The apple store ordered a new display for me, but I'm not sure if I'll go ahead since it could be much worse...

If you will go to Apple's website, Support, Discussions, MacBook Pro, there is a thread in there that is very detailed about the screen issues, http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=4021931#4021931

I just got a 17" MBP and not satisfied with the screen at all, will call AppleCare but once you read all of the posts, appears to be quite an issue.

    Hope this helps.

    Regards

cheers.. spok to appl , [of course they havent heard of any screen issues!].. they reset graphics card and power management.. it has made a little differenc but stil darker on left of screen.. i measured with a light meter and the top left corner is half a stop darker than the right of screen..

apart from the top left corner the screen seems to vary by a third of a stop throughout.. does anyone understand what i mean and think this will be within appl tolerances?

gonna take it to a macplace 2moro an see what they think..

What I can't quite understand is why lesser manufacturers, like HP, can offer a sub-$900 15" laptop with a scaringly evenly illuminated display? I saw it today when I was buying paper at Staples. To those who know about the tecvhnology:

    - are all laptops display unevenly illuminated and just some don't show it as much because of differences is contrast and brightness ?

    - Is it possible that it is the thin design of the macbook pros that is causing the uneven illumination by installing the displays in a certain way?

    - What other factors are there to consider when trying to explain why Apple's laptops (15 and 17" MBPS) are particularly bad with regard to uneven brightness and poor viewing angles?

I can't believe that Apple would choose the worst displays in the industry on purpose, especially not when companies like HP can sell cheapo laptops for less than half the price of the MBP 15" with what appeared to be an excellent display.

I'm sure they will say it's within tolerances, unless you can show how this does affect your everyday work - for example by show how something looks completely different in one place compared to another. That's just not acceptable on a pro laptop. If you can show them the macbook display and how even it is in comparison. Surely a top of the line pro machine should have a better display than their cheapest consumer machine?

If the machine is good otherwise, I'd probably opt to get it repaired since you never know what other problems a new machine might have.

I'm actually going to get my displays replaced - will report back about the new one. It's a real gamble, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

I had to wait a few days for the display since it wasn't in stock. They called yesterday and said it has arrived and that I can come in now with my machine to get it fixed. I don't know how long it will take to get it back though...

Still, it's nice that they let you keep it.

I am thinking of going to an apple store to get my mbp screen fixed (blurred spots appeared on the screen and it looks like it's dirty all the time). Hopefully they will fix the screen and let me keep my mbp while they are awaiting for the parts.

Yes, I think it will be easy. I just worry that I'll get something worse than what I have now. Damn Apple for all this crap. No customer should have to go through this with expensive computers.

the dealers hav a screen now, so can b fixed today.. appcare said if i not happy with repair or any more probs i can return it.. i got 9 days left to thrash this machin and see if its all ok..

in retrospect ive had quite a few appl products with no faults so im optimistic [??!].. at least i know the screen wil b top notch!

what r the other most common problems wiv these 17mbp s that i should look for?!

Many of the mbps have faulty keyboards, often missing letters. You should look into that.
