My MBP keeps shutting down after using it w/o being connected to the charger with at least 50% battery life still.

Today I turned on my MBP after being fully charged, used it for about an hour and the battery meter on the menubar said around 1:15 battery life then it suddenly shut down.

Is there something wrong with my battery or could it be overheating? Are other people experiencing this or should I take it to the apple store?

A few years back I had a 17" PB (RevA Alu) that did this (but at 20% remaining battery). First Apple replaced the battery. After realizing that did not fix it I was told it was the logic board that was failing. They ended up giving me a new 17" PB (RevB Alu) to replace it d/t a shortage of parts for fixing the logic boards on the RevA models.
So from my past experience it sounds like it is the logic board.

Yeah, take it back. It could still be a bad battery, but it could also be a bad logic board as Jovian9 said. :)

    Happened again earlier today :(

This time I only used it for about 40 min. before it shut down. I'll go take it to the apple store next week

Thanks for the response guys! :p

I have a Rev A, received on Fev. 22nd MBP and this just started happening to me over the weekend.

I think the battery chip that monitors stuff probably got fried because it gets so damn hot.

I spent time on the phone and all they wanted to do was sell me Apple Care.

I'm taking it in today and it's going to be a sight to see, 'cause I'm going to be screaming at them in the store about it.

Apple replaced my battery today. I asked if it had anything to do with my Rev A computer getting so hot, and would the new battery fail as well. They said no.

I'm skeptical, but we shall see.

Reports of Apple running a silent recall of Macbook Pro batteries are all over the place.
Not suprising to me at all.

In fact, I think my battery is defective. I figured mine is because under System Profiler, check the power tab.

My Amperage number is a massive negative one. :)
    Probably not normal.

there was a silent recall of some of the batteries from the early MacBook Pros. Mine started doing this a couple months ago, but it was even worse- when it hit about 97% or so, it'd die. I couldn't use it on battery for more than about 5 minutes before it would shut off.

Plus the casing on my battery started warping pretty bad, to the point to where my computer wouldn't sit flat on a solid surface. Apple replaced it and it seems to work just fine now.

yeah, I'm sure it'll happen again, but hopefully this time it'll be much further down the road. I'm still trying to get Apple to just replace my whole computer because the paint is flaking below the keyboard and after getting it back from repair, it now whines horribly (never did before) and it looks like they made a few nicks on the screen which are very annoying.

I had this happen to me, and Apple replaced my battery. Since then I have had no problems, so hopefully everything will work out for you.

    powerbook pro shutdowns

i have a brand new leased powerbookpro and the thing, if left alone for more than 20 min. in an air conditioned office, attached to its power supply and sitting on a usb driven cool pad, will initiate a logoff and be completely shut dowwn when i return to it.

it happens all the time, but will stop itself IF i leave an unsaved document (of any kind) up and running.

Have tried software upgrades to the OS but no joy... am ready to flip this book out the window... anyone else seeing this happen?

yah just recently their was a pic of a dell exploading. remeber we are dealing with LITHIUM -ion batteries. The element that reacts with everything basicly. if you put some on your kitchen table it would absorb the moisture and expload rapidly. So nowounder a bit of overcharging makes 'em buldge and or expload.
