Hi all - I've been trying to use a network-attached PostScript3 printer after installing Tiger. The printer worked flawlessly under 10.3.x using the Rendevous/Bonjour setup for what it's worth.

Anyway, I went into the System Prefs, then Printers and added a new printer. Bonjour auto-detected the printer (just as it did with 10.3.x) and I cruised-through the process.

However, when I try to actually print to the printer, the job submits to the local queue and after a second or two, gets a red "!" on it and the queue goes into a stopped state. Attempting to restart the job results in the same delay and eventual !.

Bonjour has configured the printer enough so that when I go into Utilities, it opens the webpage on the printer (ie. http://192.168.1.3/config.html) but the printing itself is a total no-go. I've tried deleting the printer and re-adding, updating to the 10.4.1 update and deleting/adding, etc. and it all results in the same issue.

It appears that OS X (maybe cups) is trying to create a "1600n.local" DNS entry as I get an error about "1600n.local. not found" as you can see in my log below.

Any ideas on how I can fix this?

EDIT: I noticed that my Mac's name, which I set in the Sharing section, is "osiris.local" -- I'm guessing that the .local should be my domainname (which I do set via DHCP but the Mac seems to be ignoring). Perhaps changing "local" to mydomain.com would fix this... Any ideas on this also?

    Thanks,
    Mike

What is controlling your domain, handing out DHCP and DNS information that these systems are attempting to use? You may want to set whatever is giving out DNS and DHCP names to the correct domain name that you are seeking out. As it looks like your computer is attempting ot connect to the full DNS name of the printer device, and for some reason can't talk to it.

On the webpage provided by your printer, what does it call itself (Full DNS name), if it is not the same name that your comptuer is attempting to use, your jobs will fail like they are now.

I do set the domain in the DHCP server I run, however, I can only find reference to this domain in the resolve.conf file - not anywhere else in the GUI.

What has changed from 10.3 to 10.4 that would cause this? Nothing else on my network has changed - just the format/install of Tiger...

    Its been a long time

I know it's been a long time on this post. I just got a Macbook and am having the exact same problem you described with your Dell 1600n.

Did you ever get it resolved? Do you remember how?
