1)when selecting / setting up mail to sync, do you have to use a @me.com address?

    2) i don't actually have one, is the time to make one?

    Thanks

    1) No, you don't have to have a me.com email address for email on your iOS device. However, iCloud mail works around me.com email addresses only, if that's what you're asking.

    2) If you want to make one, just turn on iCloud mail on your device in "Mail, Contacts, Calendars" in Settings and it will ask you what you want your @me.com username to be. Good luck!

do you need to have the me address saved in the contact for imessage to work out its an ios to ios message? Or do they just need to have a me address set up on their phone?

Neither you nor they need @me.com for iMessages, you can set up any email address to receive iMessages.

Then why does iCloud setup only allow the me.com option? I can't change this to say hotmail.com. Me.com is greyed out and all i can change is the prefix (username).
