I have a new iMac with 384 mb of RAM. I want to upgrade it to as large as 1gb. Does anyone have any recommendations on memory retailers? or what to upgrade to?

What will you be doing with your machine?

Also keep in mind that one of the RAM slots is sodimm(Notebook RAM), so a 512MB chip will not be cheap!!

In my opinion, the best place to buy Apple ram is from:

http://eshop.macsales.com/

OWC always has the best, or nearly the best prices available, plus they have excellent customer care and warranties.

My advice is to go to the site, and sign up for the mailing list. There are always deals on ram and other products in their news letter.

Hope this helps,

1-800-4memory.com has some of the cheapest prices around, and I have not had troubles from them.

For an ABSOLUTE minimum, you can use the current 384MB of RAM. If you will be doing some heavy work with OS X max it out. If not, at least get another 256MB, but I would recommend another 512MB.

Just a FYI, here are the prices on 133MHz bus, 512MB ram chips via OWC's mailing list specials:

CL2 - $65
CL3 - $57
