I'm thinking of buying the MacBook Pro (either the 15.4" or the 17"). However, I' m not quite sure whether I should buy it in August or wait and hope that Apple upgrades their MBP line quickly with the new processors.

The MBP will be my primary computer for university. I'm quite willing to wait a reasonable amount of time to get a MBP with the new processor. On the other hand, I'm not able to wait for too long (into the winter and the next year).

Tips? Suggestions? Thoughts? I'd appreciate any advice you can give me.

Any reason to wait other than wanting the latest and greatest? The current lineup is pretty sweet great for most things at the moment

Well, I just want to get the best bang for my buck.
If the wait won't be too long - then I'd rather wait and get the better deal (beginning of August is the EARLIEST I can buy anything for various reasons). However if it probably won't come out befefore October (or November at the worst), then I think I'd rather buy the MacBook Pro with the Core Duo processor.

You're right. It's "Merom", but I really don't like that name. Memron sounds so much cooler. :)

It sounds more like a bad 1970s Sci-fi movie robot or computer.

If there are changes, we should see them by September.

There have been many hundreds of similar threads, as someone other than me will no doubt point out. They will no doubt be rather angry when they do, as seems to be a common trend I've noticed. Be warned. :p

I have decided to wait until August, no longer.
The computers now are great, but considering I intend to keep any macbook pro throughout my university degree (5 years) and longer. It seems a reasonably common idea that the merom Core 2 Duo processors will be supported much longer than the older yonah Core Duo's, as they are 64 bit. It seems more than likely that 32 bit support will (eventually) become problematic to find.
Also, people say it's best to wait for Apple to create a more refined model, therefore the August edition should have eliminated many of the "mooing", fan problems, battery problems, heat problems, etc.

Other people say it is silly to wait, as something better is always on the horizon.

It all depends on how long you intend to keep this computer I suppose, and if the gamble of software being all 64 bit in the near future outweighs the cons of waiting for a few months.
I've already survived a semester of uni without a notebook, so I figure I can survive a few weeks into the next without one as well.

By the way, if you were talking about waiting after August until the next revision, er... Santa Rosa, I don't know much about it, but it's next year.

    Hope this helped.

Yes, that is precisely why I'm at least waiting until August - in hopes that Apple fixes most of the current issues with the MBP.
As for how long I intend to keep it - hopefully 3+ years.

You'd be foolish to think Apple will drop support for their early adopters any time soon. Unless you plan on keeping this machines for 10 years you don't really have anything to worry about by buying a Yonah-based machine.

I suppose so. Other software writers may not be so kind, however. I suppose it depends on the software he intends to use. Maybe. I might just be dreaming.

Go ahead and purchase one if you need it! All I have to say is, if you DO want a Merom based Mac near August or September, consider this: buy a MacBook for now, sell it and buy a MacBook Pro when they come with Meroms. That's what I'm going for now. I just purchased a MacBook 2.0 Ghz in white, and I'm LOVING it. It's just so speedy, even with integrated graphics!

Let me tell you how fast this thing is: it's VERY fast. I just came from a Aluminum PowerBook G4 1 Ghz with 1.5 GB of RAM. And I even thought that was decent for this time. Until I got this computer...I was simply amazed at the speed boost! It even feels faster than the Power Mac G5 Dual 2 Ghz that I have at work! Now I'm using a combination of that and the same MacBook. :D It pretty much doubles my productivity now.

Yeah I know, I wanted to wait for Merom, but I just couldn't any longer! I couldn't resist. :p
