Microsoft Stores Next to Apple Stores: Where’s the Win?

    Just an echo article of many points out there.

    • Microsoft is a Software company, not a PC maker
    • Office and Windows are already to well known to promote further
    • Zunes don't even call in a decent user base
    • X-Box experts are all over the neighborhood in the shape of 7+ year-olds
    • Microsoft doesn't have the Apple controled environment and Genius comparison due to hardware problems, not software.

    Interesting article and some well thought out responses.
    It does seem that MS is trying to hang on to their market share for dear life. They're not going to rule forever. Especially in the consumer market.
    I wonder what their market share is in the consumer market vs. Apple's?

    They will have employees scream "Your not cool enough for an Apple" when you walk into the Apple Store! :p

    don't any of us forget that competition is GOOD for the consumer.


    think about recent price drops for better computers through apple, perhaps a response to windows ads with people looking for sub $1500 notebooks?

    snow leopard's price and target release date, DEFINITELY influenced by the development of windows 7 for lower pricing too.


    let them battle away! I'll just get apple products for cheaper!

    The cynic in me thinks Microsoft is doing this as a marketing move--to REDUCE the need to compete via actual product development.

    But the kid in me likes the frosted side.

    I have never met an Apple store 'Expert' with more knowledge than a 7-year old... :(

    But what competition is this creating? Microsoft either sells its products directly to businesses already (via licensing agreements), through OEM channels (Dell, Lennovo, HP, etc), or in electronic retailers (Best Buy, etc). There really isn't much to bring to the game that others do not. The last time MS went retail, they failed since customers got most of what they want elsewhere and MS doesn't want to tick off their OEM partners. Most computer stores do poorly because they do not offer the kind of experience that Apple can offer. Most PC vendors are hardware vendors that resell Windows - well guess what, you use Windows on one computer its the same as another PC vendor. Apple has both hardware and software and their products are famed for their uniqueness. So what can MS do that won;t tick off it's vendors?

    1) Show off their product at the same price or more (certainly not less)? OK, most people buy PC's direct or go to a big box store.
    2) Sell software? Again, same price as the big box stores already do?
    3) Well we know how that does.
    4) XBOX? thats really saturated in other retailers. Not much to offer there?
    5) Business services? They do that directly, not in a retail front....

    Microsoft's OEM business means that they really don't sell their flagship prodcuct directly to the consumer. The only way to do that, would be to potentially screw with their partners. I fail to see what they are going to offer other than a name that everybody already knows.

    the problem is microsoft doesn't have a product line! I honestly don't know what they are going to sell...
